The Stephen D. Lee Foundation is happy to announce the return of its annual party celebrating Valentine’s Day, which will be an early celebration held from 7-10 p.m. Feb. 12, at Belle Bridge, home of Seleana and Nathan Miller.
Belle Bridge was built by Richard Evans around 1856 and is a Columbus home attributed to James S. Lull, a celebrated Columbus architect and builder.
The Millers purchased Belle Bridge from Dr. and Mrs. Chance Laws. Dr. Laws and his family purchased the home in 1979 and restored the front portico to its original design which had been lost to Victorian alterations. Dr. Laws also gutted and restored the inside making the home even more elegant and, yet, conducive to raising a “modern” family.
“We are grateful to the Millers for accepting our invitation to host this year’s gathering. Belle Bridge is a star among our historic homes, and we appreciate the opportunity to let it shine for our patrons. Our guests will be overwhelmed by the beauty of the home as well as the flowers and menu we have planned,” said Eulalie Davis, chairman of the Foundation.
All proceeds of the evening will go to maintaining the Stephen D. Lee Home. The present project is the repair and replacement of the tin roof over the front porch. The Foundation is working with the Mississippi Department of Archives and History to complete this project in the correct manner.
“The Valentine Party is critical to the maintenance of the historic Lee Home,” Davis said. “We have a list a mile long of projects both big and small, and we know every year there will also be some sort of emergency. We are extremely grateful to the community for its support and are particularly grateful to the Millers.”
