The community is invited to attend an official commemoration of the Martin Luther King Holiday at 8 a.m. Jan. 17, 2022, at the Trotter Convention Center in downtown Columbus.
Columbus Air Force Base, the city of Columbus, the Columbus-Lowndes Convention and Visitors Bureau, Lowndes County Board of Supervisors, Mississippi University for Women, Sodexo Food Services and United Way of Lowndes & Noxubee Counties have partnered to provide a free breakfast and a program that will feature former All-American D.J. Sanders, who is now a volunteer assistant coach with the Mississippi State University softball team, as the keynote speaker.
Sanders, a Columbus native, was a multi-sport standout at New Hope High School and went on to play NCAA Division I softball at the University of Louisiana and the University of Oregon. She earned All-America honors in 2017 and All-Pacific-12 Conference honors in 2018. Sanders was drafted No. 21 overall by the Chicago Bandits in the 2018 National Pro-Fast Pitch Draft and played the summer of 2020 with Athletes Unlimited.
Space at the event is limited, so those interested in attending are asked to RSVP at muw.edu/mlk#register.
