The Mississippi University for Women Music Department presents “Jazz at Poindexter,” a concert featuring the MUW Jazz Ensemble. The concert will take place Tuesday, April 23 at 7:30 p.m. in the Connie Sills Kossen Auditorium, Poindexter Hall. The event is free and open to the public.
Under the direction of Valentin M. Bogdan, associate professor of music, the group will perform a mix of jazz standards, fusion jazz, Argentinian tangos and old-time favorites.
According to Bogdan, this concert pays homage to the great jazz musicians of the past: John Coltrane, Bobby Timmons, Herbie Hancock, and a few others. Their compositions will be in addition to ethnic jazz, and tango music of the famous Argentinean composer Astor Piazzola.
The MUW Jazz Ensemble is a select group of MUW student musicians. Some of their performing highlights include participation in the 2017 and 2018 Alcorn State Jazz Festival — events headlined by jazz greats Ramsey Lewis and Chick Correa, respectively — performances at the Strand Theatre in Vicksburg, performances at the 2017 and 2018 Welty Gala, the 2019 Columbus Arts Council Gala, and concerts throughout the local community.
