The heat of summer could not slow down Lowndes County 4-H’ers competing in the 2016 Mississippi State 4-H Shooting Sports Invitational in Meridian July 8-9. Fifteen youth represented Lowndes in numerous disciplines.
Competing in .22 Rifle, Tanner Holley placed 13th, and Isaiah Wells placed 25th. Anna Beth Brock placed sixth in Air Rifle and qualified to represent the state in the 2017 National Competition in Nebraska.
Competing in Air Pistol, William Brewer placed fourth; Caleb Brewer placed fifth. Both young men qualified to represent Lowndes County and Mississippi in the 2017 National Competition. Jordan Taylor placed sixth in Air Rifle. William McBryde placed 48th in Archery. Amy Riggs placed third in Muzzleloader.
Several members competed in Shotgun, with placings as follows: Walker McCullough, 39th; Cooper Reed, 52nd; Braden Bowen, 59th; Kale Ensser, 79th; Tripp Gardner, 85th; Josh Taylor, 89th; and Brandi McCullough 97th.
All participants spend many hours with certified coaches learning safety, proper technique and rules of competition during the year leading up to the competition. The 4-H’ers who participated at the State Competition qualified by meeting specified scoring criteria at District Competitions.
National level
Three Lowndes County 4-H’ers competed in Grand Island, Nebraska, during the week of June 26-30 at the National 4-H Shooting Sports Championships. Members representing Lowndes County 4-H included Austin Stokes, Brandi McCullough and Amy Riggs.
Stokes placed 30th overall in Compound Archery and seventh overall in 3-D Archery.
McCullough competed in .22 Pistol and placed eighth in Camp Perry and 12th in Slow Fire, as well as the .22 Pistol Team, placing second overall.
Riggs placed 28th individually and 11th as a team in Muzzleloader overall.
