Sherlock Holmes, Alex Cross, Adam Dalgliesh, Commissario Brunetti, Sam Spade, Perry Mason, Miss Marple, and Lisbeth Salander: February is "mystery month" at the Table Talks sponsored by Friends of the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library. The Friends launches its latest series on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at noon in the library meeting room, 314 7th St. N.
"We all love a good mystery. Who hasn't curled up on the couch with a good mystery novel on a rainy evening?" said board member Jo Shumake. "But, what if you can't find anyone with whom to discuss your favorite writers, mysteries, or characters? Our first speaker, Peter Imes, can definitely help readers with that."
Imes will discuss ways to use the Internet to find interesting books and to join discussions on virtually any type of book. "I will be using Stieg Larsson's phenomenally popular 'Girl with the Dragon Tattoo' as an example of how one can join an online book discussion," Imes related.
"We'll also cover starting your own online book club. This will be a beginner's level presentation," he added. "Anyone comfortable with browsing the Internet will be comfortable with what we will cover."
Doors open at 11:30 a.m. for those wishing to bring their lunch and socialize before the program begins at noon. The Friends will serve iced tea.
Other programs during February include:
n Feb. 15 -- Columbus book discussion club "The Sisters" focuses its attention on best-selling author James Patterson's Alex Cross mysteries.
n Feb. 22 -- Dr. Kim Whitehead, Mississippi University for Women professor of English, leads a discussion on Mississippi author Carolyn Haines' mystery "Them Bones" and emcees an Internet Skype chat with Haines.
n Feb. 29 -- David Dunn, local attorney and avid mystery novel fan, discusses some of his favorite mystery writers (Donna Leon, Eric Ambler, P.D. James, among others).
