Peggy and Charlie Bates, of Starkville, have discovered the joy of salad table gardening after purchasing three raised-bed garden tables from the Oktibbeha County Master Gardeners.
The local organization began producing and selling the tables in 2021 to fund scholarships for Mississippi State University horticulture students. According to Charles Morgan, who spearheads the project, the tables are selling as fast as they can be produced.
Several years ago, the Bates retired to Starkville when they began to crave a slower lifestyle, which included growing some of their own food. Peggy grew up in Starkville and is the former Peggy Longest. She always hoped to return. Charlie was a willing partner who has the knack of fitting in wherever he finds himself, says his wife.
“It’s so much easier to cultivate a garden that doesn’t require stooping and getting on your knees,“ Charlie observed.
They will be at the Master Gardener Plant sell this weekend to pick up some new plants for their raised bed gardens. The tables will be on display from 8-11 a.m. May 21 during the Starkville Community Market, at the Fire Station Park, Lampkin Street.
There are two sizes available priced from $85-135. Delivery is available.
