Starkville Area Arts Council is seeking volunteers for its annual Forks and Corks fundraiser, set for March 12 at the Mill Conference Center, 100 Mercantile Lane, Starkville.
Volunteers are needed to help setup, work sign-in table, sell cookbooks and help breakdown.
Discounted tickets are available for volunteers who also want to partake in food and drink.

Apply now for SAAC summer scholarship
Applications for Starkville Area Arts Council’s annual Summer Scholarships program are available. Awards are available to students between ages 11 and 18 for extracurricular youth development programs in art and art education. Any art discipline is eligible (performing arts, music, applied arts, visual arts, creative writing, etc.). Funds may be used for summer lessons, camps, auditions and more! Applications are due April 30.
Awards are based on a combination of need and merit for those who live in Oktibbeha County currently attending public, private, or home schools.
Rules and applications are online at www.starkvillearts.net/artseducation. Awards are paid directly to the agency / vendor, so applicants must also identify a specific program in advance of submitting an application.
Workshops to help local entrepreneurs
Two local organizations are hosting programs for people who want to start a business.
Biz Kids is a free program for children who want to start a business. Presented by Golden Triangle Business Women, the event will be held from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 9 at Columbus Arts Council, 501 Main St., Columbus.

The other program to help people start businesses will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 19 at Amazing Grace Adult Day Care, 7141 Highway 45 Alt. N., West Point.
According to Pearlie Lane, who created the group LIFT, the program will include creating a business brand and will offer other services.
Lane said she is looking for help trying to get the program off ground. It’s aim is to help others in the community so they can become productive citizens.

Extension office to host gardening seminars
Mississippi State University Extension will hold a series of vegetable gardening seminars in Lowndes County starting Monday.
During each free seminar, participants will learn about soil preparation, fertilization, management techniques, diseases and insects, vegetable garden resources, tomatoes and weed control.
Each seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. The dates and locations are as follows: Monday, Caledonia Community Center; Tuesday, Artesia Community Center; March 14, Walton’s Greenhouse in Columbus; March 28, New Hope Community Center.

Columbus library to host reception
The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library System will host the Annual Quilt Reception at noon March 15 in the meeting room. Quilt of Valor Organization members will be the guest speakers. The library displays the work of local quilters from surrounding counties during Pilgrimage each year.
The quilts will be on display through April 29.
Observatory to host free program
FRENCH CAMP — Rainwater Observatory will offer a free program for this season, Impact: Solar System Encounters at 7 p.m. Friday.
This presentation explores one of the most important processes that have shaped objects in the solar system — impacts and crater formation. In addition, Rainwater has a new meteorite exhibit with objects such as a real Mars meteorite and a piece of the meteor that hit Chelyabinsk, Russia, in 2013.
Rainwater Observatory and Planetarium is located one mile east of Natchez Trace Parkway, off MS Highway 413, near the village of French Camp.
