Columbus Arts Council will start the new year with mixed-media and photography exhibits by local artists Joe A. MacGown and John Burrow.
An opening reception will be held from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday in the Rosenzweig Arts Center, 501 Main St., Columbus.
“Interdimensional travels: Drawings by Joe A. MacGown” will be shown in the main gallery.
The artist retired in 2020 as a researcher and illustrator for the Mississippi State Entomological Museum.
According to the CAC website, MacGown creates “chaotic assemblages of strange mutated creatures, crowded surreal landscapes, and mandala-like designs that reflect his thoughts and observations of life on this planet.”
His artwork ranges from mutated creatures, crowded surreal landscapes and mandala-like designs.
“Using imaginative imagery and random patterns, he produces detailed drawings and mixed media paintings by simply allowing ideas to ‘flow out of his head’ using a method he describes as ‘Subconscious Meandering.’ ”
MacGown’s work has been featured in numerous local and regional exhibitions, as well as in international group shows.
Burrow is a doctorate student at Mississippi State. He specializes in 18th and 19th century British economic and taxation history.
According to the CAC website, he enjoys nearly “all forms of the humanities, especially writing, reading, researching, and photography. He especially enjoys photographing landscapes, forests, travels, and urban scenes.”
Burrow also photographs Hugh Manatee, MSU’s Institute for the Humanities’ official mascot, as it interacts with the public and explores the humanities.
