St. Catherine Orthodox Church will host a wonder working icon of St. Ann and the Virgin Mary on Oct. 30.
The icon will be at the church at 725 4th Ave. North, around 4:30 p.m. The church will hold a service at 5 p.m. A talk about the icon will be held after the service.
In the Orthodox Church, icons — depictions of saints and other figures important to the church — are on display throughout the church, said Father Alexis Baldwin.
“Traditionally people come and ask specific prayers for healing illnesses, getting help, and ask the saints depicted in the icons the prayers,” he said. “It’s like asking a really good friend who is close to Jesus for help.”
An icon that people say has answered prayers is considered a working wonder icon, Baldwin noted. The icon coming to Columbus depicts St. Ann holding her infant daughter, the Virgin Mary.
It is being accompanied by Father John Parker, dean of St. Tikhon Seminary, which is on the same property as St. Tikhon Monastery in South Canaan, Pennsylvania, where the wonder working icon stays. After the service, Parker will speak about the icon and its history.
Usually, people stand up during Orthodox church services, but there are some benches, Baldwin said.
