Local bands are coming together to help out the family of one of their own later this month.
ChainFest 21 will be held from noon to 6 p.m. Aug. 29 at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
Organizers hope ChainFest becomes an annual event that celebrates Mike Chain, a bassist and vocalist who performed with several local bands including Bouncing Betty, Juke Joint Gypsies and Big Hoss and the Little Joes.
Chain, a Columbus resident, died Nov. 11, 2019. At the time of his death, he was sound engineer supervisor in event services at Mississippi State University.
Chain used his musical talents to help his community. According to his obituary, he used his knowledge in sound production to help community benefits, clubs and other charitable organizations, such as Junior Auxiliary, Columbus Pilgrimage, Market Street Festival, Columbus Arts Council, Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau, and Columbus Main Street Project.
ChainFest organizers recalled how he often reached out to various bands seeking help for a nonprofit or particular cause.
“We can’t count the times we got a message like that from Mike,” organizers said in a press release. “No matter the tragedy or suffering, he was there to help.”
When he died, his wife, Alice Chain, was fighting cancer. A group of people were already talking about organizing a benefit to help the family when Chain died, followed by the pandemic.
“So we are here now, to help Alice and honor Mike,” organizers said in a press release. “The proceeds from ChainFest 21 will be presented to Alice.”
Chain had a vision for Columbus to be a hub for live music.
“It was our hope that ChainFest will become a wildly successful annual event that provides support for charities Mike was passionate about while showcasing the wealth of musical talent in the region,” organizers said.
At Alice Chain’s request, there is no set admission fee. Organizers ask for a $10 minimum donation for admittance, payable to ChainFest.
Besides music, there will also be a silent auction, food and more.
