Make plans to groove and move this weekend as Columbus Arts Council will host a concert Friday and 3rd Saturday Music and Arts Festival on Saturday.
Blues musician Bill “Watermelon Slim” Homans will perform at the OMNOVA Theater in the Rosenweig Arts Center, 501 Main St., Columbus. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m.
Tickets are $15 for CAC members, $20 for nonmembers and $20 the day of the show. For information or to purchase tickets, visit the website columbus-arts.org or call (662) 328-2787.
Homans has built a reputation with his raw, impassioned intensity, according to the Columbus Arts Council.
Watermelon Slim’s latest album “Traveling Man” — a two disc set — was nominated in the 2021 Blues Music Awards’ “Acoustic Blues Album” category.
If you’re on the fence about attending the performance, listen to a live version of Scalemaster Blues, at open.spotify.com/track/2lW8DWEmEHLIu7IcvtweUL?si=c87084e505b7454c . Homans plays the slide guitar effortlessly as it harmonizes with his gritty and soulful voice.
Watermelon Slim’s performance is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts, Mississippi Arts Commission, Sunstroke House and Bankfirst.
3rd Saturday
Columbus Arts Council will host its 3rd Saturday Art and Music Fair Saturday. It is planned to be the last fair of the season.
About 30 art vendors are scheduled to sell items from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on 3rd Street, next to Munson and Brothers. Music will be performed from noon-10 p.m. at Munson and Brothers’ beer garden.
According to Interim Director Shane Kinder, the music lineup will feature Jessica Horton from noon-1:30 p.m.; Brad Sims, 2-3:30 p.m.; Taylor Hollingsworth, 4-5:45 p.m.; Holligrahams, 6:15-8 p.m., and JMac, 8:30-10 p.m.
Besides performing Saturday afternoon, Hollingsworth will sell his art all day. The Birmingham resident has toured nationally with Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band, The Dexateens, and Phoebe Bridgers, Kinder said.
Columbus Lions Club will provide the food, while the Fred P. Phillips YMCA will run the kids art table.
The past two 3rd Saturdays have been either canceled or modified due to weather. Columbus Arts Council will post any updates regarding its events on Facebook.
