Sounds of Summer concert series will conclude Thursday. Swing Shift is scheduled to perform from 6-8 p.m. at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a lawn chair or blanket.
Main Street Columbus Executive Director Barbara Bigelow said Thursday’s concert is the last of the series.
“We’re hoping that the weather will cooperate next week,” she said on Friday, after the July 22 concert featuring The Bouncing Betty was cancelled due to rain.
Swing Shift, born in a since-shutdown recording studio on Gardner Boulevard around 1985, has had many members since its founding. The band thrives in the music business, due its ability to entertain a crowd.
In a previous interview, Johnny Coleman, lead singer and keyboardist for Swing Shift, said attendees can expect “a rock ‘n’ roll band masquerading as a rhythm and blues bunch” from their performance.
The band’s “flexible” set features tunes spanning genres and decades. The band’s ultimate goal is to get people out of their seats and dance, Coleman said.
Style opened the concert series in June. Amy Moore and her husband Robert Moore founded the band in 2016. She said they loved performing at the soccer complex.
“With a stage that enabled the crowd to get closer to us, it felt much more personable, which is what we love!” she said. “It was great to be able to see everyone’s faces instead of just a bunch of people that are too far away for us to see as individuals!”
Style Entertainment consists of two live bands: Style, which performed at Sounds of Summer; and Stylish, who’s male singer was a guest musician at Sounds of Summer.
Moore said they also offer DJ service.
“All of our acts perform mostly at weddings, class reunions, private birthday parties, etc., so a public show like Sounds of Summer is different for us, but so exciting because our friends and family can finally attend,” she said. “We had friends and family from all over Mississippi that came to see us this year and many are planning to come next time as well. We sure do appreciate Main Street, Barbara, the Chamber, and all the many sponsors for putting together such a great family event and inviting us to participate.”
