‘Cooking for a Crowd’ is among January Quick Bites

‘Cooking for a Crowd’ is among January Quick Bites

With the new year comes advice from the Mississippi State University Extension Service Quick Bites program on topics to kick off 2020. Each interactive video session is presented on designated Thursdays from noon to 1 p.m. at county Extension offices, and at Bost 409 on the MSU campus. Sign-up with your county Extension office is required. Numbers are provided below.

  • Jan. 9 — In a program session titled “Forcing Bulbs,” Oktibbeha County Master Gardener Jim McKell shares ideas for gardening indoors while the weather is dreary. He’ll share expertise on forcing bulbs in water and how to pot them correctly. He will also take a look at some interesting containers for bulbs.
  • Jan. 23 — Extension Instructor Cobie Rutherford with 4-H Youth Development will talk about 4-H Opportunities for 2020. This program will cover specific contests at State Congress, PAD, Cookout, Record Books and national trips for the year.
  • Jan. 30 — Food fundraisers, church suppers, potlucks and the like are great ways to socialize with community. In “Cooking for a Crowd: A Focus on Food Safety,” Assistant Extension Professor Courtney Crist in Food Science, Nutrition and Health Promotion at MSU covers how to reduce food safety risks when feeding a large number of people. The priority is on keeping food safe as well as delicious. Crist will also talk about safe purchasing, storage, preparation and service for a crowd.

    Those interested in attending any free video program should contact their county’s Extension office to sign up. (In Lowndes County, 662-328-2111; Oktibbeha County, 662-323-5916; Clay County, 662-494-5371.)
