A Sunday at the Bluff program at Plymouth Bluff Center today at 2 p.m. features Renee Clary on “Pioneering Women in the HIS-tory of Geology: More Than Sellers of Seashells by the Seashore.” Early geological contributions of Mary Anning, Ethelred Bennett and Florence Bascom are the topic of this talk by the associate professor and graduate coordinator in Mississippi State’s Department of Geosciences.
With a primary focus on integrated science education and improved scientific visualization, Clary is a strong advocate for the inclusion of the history and philosophy of science in science teaching. She researches Henry de la Beche and the Golden Age of Geology, early polar exploration and early women participants in the geological sciences.
As a fellow of the Geological Society of London, Clary is a member of the History of Geology Group. She also is a member of the History and Philosophy of Geology Division of the Geological Society of America, for which she served as chair, 2013-2015. She was elected to the International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences (INHIGEO) and currently serves as an editor for the Geological Society of London’s 50th anniversary INHIGEO commemorative volume.
Clary was named the 2016 Outstanding Science Educator by the Mississippi Academy of Sciences and the Mississippi Science Teachers Association 2011 Outstanding College Science Teacher.
Sunday at the Bluff programs are free and open to the public. Plymouth Bluff Center is located at 2200 Old West Point Road, Columbus.
