The Mississippi State communication department’s theatrical program this week presents a unique production limited to only 120 patrons per show.
From Wednesday to Friday “The Caucasian Chalk Circle” features university students in performances to begin at 7:30 p.m. each day on the McComas Hall main stage.
General admission tickets are $10 and may be purchased at comm.msstate.edu/theatre or, if available, at the door.
Translated by playwright Alistair Beaton, the play is a rendering of Bertolt Brecht’s satirical masterpiece about a servant girl who sacrifices everything to protect an abandoned child in the midst of a civil war. When peace is restored, the boy’s mother comes to claim him but, calling on the ancient tradition of the chalk circle, a comical judge sets about resolving the dispute.
Director John Nara, visiting assistant professor of communication, said the play’s set up and audience experience is a first-of-its-kind venture for Theatre MSU.
“We are inviting the audience onto the stage for an ‘in-the-round,'” he said, explaining that the need for an intimate setting is the reason for the limited seating.
