Friends of the Library is pleased to welcome poetess Catherine Pierce to the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library for Table Talk on Wednesday, April 10. Pierce is the author of two powerful books of poetry, “The Girls of Peculiar” (Saturnalia, 2012) and “Famous Last Words” (Saturnalia, 2008), both of which she will be reading from. Her poems have appeared in The Best American Poetry, Slate, Boston Review, Ploughshares, Crab Orchard Review, Mississippi Review and Arts and Letters, among others.
Continuing with this month’s Table Talk theme of “Let’s Live In The Books Of Our Childhood” (from “The Girls In Peculiar”), Pierce will discuss some of the challenges that come with writing about childhood and adolescence, as well as take a look at the ways nostalgia can both distort and deepen poetry.
Pierce grew up in Delaware and earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Susquehanna University, her Master of Fine Arts degree from Ohio State University, and her doctorate from the University of Missouri. She now lives in Starkville, where she teaches and co-directs the creative writing program at Mississippi State University.
April is National Poetry Month. Treat yourself by attending Table Talk, Wednesday, April 10, to hear this accomplished poetess. Bring lunch and arrive at 11:30 a.m. to socialize. Iced tea is always served. Pierce’s presentation begins at noon and will last one hour. Table Talk is in the second floor meeting room of the library located at 314 Seventh St. N. Everyone is welcome. There is no charge.
