The Columbus-Lowndes Public Library has accepted nine boxes of historic materials and records from Main Street Columbus Inc.
The records include hundreds of photographs, reports, newspaper clippings, correspondence, flyers, posters and brochures all relating to the various projects with which Main Street Columbus has been involved. Events highlighted in the collection are the Market Street Festival, Leadership Plaza, the Riverwalk and various historic preservation efforts downtown.
Past Main Street Columbus Director Amber Brislin said, “Main Street Columbus was founded in 1985 and Market Street Festival began in 1996; there are years of records and documents that hold so many memories and so much history. It’s great to know that these pieces of history will now be around for a long time and will be available for the community to view and learn from.”
Main Street Columbus Inc. was first called the Columbus Main Street Program. It was created on Aug. 9, 1985, at a joint meeting with Downtown Columbus Unlimited. Columbus Main Street and Downtown Columbus Unlimited eventually merged in July 1992, thus becoming Main Street Columbus, Inc.
The organization has been instrumental in projects and events in Columbus including the Columbus Christmas Parade, Wassial Fest, Afternoon Tunes, Noon Tunes, Sounds of Summer, Market Street Festival, New Years’ Eve Ball Drop & Block Party, the Riverwalk Project, Leadership Plaza and much more.
