CAC begins new year with fresh logo, focus

Mississippi University for Women graphic design major Chelsea Mitchell went back to basics, and it paid off. In a recent logo design contest hosted by the Columbus Arts Council, Mitchell’s submission was selected as the winner.

After many years of using a stylized Greek column as its logo, the nonprofit Arts Council begins 2013 with Mitchell’s building blocks of art on all marketing and publicity. The Illinois native’s clean design features three primary colors — yellow, blue and red.

The 23-year-old said, “Just as a book written in English is only a rearrangement of 26 letters, the entirety of the color spectrum is but a combination of these three hues. The logo represents the ABC’s of art in a sense.”

Mitchell continued, “There is much more to an arts council than just a gallery. It is not a museum to be disconnected from and merely ‘visited’ but a place meant to be a part of the everyday life of the community, not only as a hub for artistic means, but as a tool for the education of art itself. It is because of these qualities that this logo has come into existence — A representation of the building blocks of art, not just squares but an emphasis of the basics portrayed through the ever-cemented primary colors.”

Numerous designs were submitted during the contest. A selection committee made up of local business members of public relations and marketing firms narrowed the field, with the final decision made by the CAC Board of Directors in late November.

CAC Executive Director Tina Sweeten thanked all those who submitted designs, praising the effort and talent invested in the projects.

The Arts Council begins 2013 not only with a new logo, but with a new sales gallery as well. Gallery 2, a gift shop with original art, jewelry and other items, debuted during Wassail Fest Dec. 7.

The CAC also launches 2013 with a redefined strategic plan to increase its role as a vital presence in presenting, supporting and inspiring artists and creative endeavors. Its efforts encompass not only visual arts, but music, theater, dance, children’s camps and educational classes in subjects ranging from photography to basket weaving. The organization advocates a better understanding of and appreciation for the arts and their role in our diverse communities.
