Steve Hohnstadt, organist and choirmaster at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Columbus, will present a 3 p.m. recital today of music by Bach, Mendelssohn and other composers, along with two compositions by the organist.
Hohnstadt is a graduate student in church music at the University of Alabama, with Dr. Faythe Freese his teacher. He is a Detroit native and a 2007 graduate of Concordia University Wisconsin, where he studied church music with Dr. John Behnke. From 2007 to 2011, when he joined St. Paul’s, Hohnstadt was music director at Pilgrim Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.
The St. Paul’s organ is an Aeolian-Skinner instrument built in 1953, with 8-inch and 4-inch stops. The organ includes trumpet pipes at the back of the church, which will also sound during the recital. The console has been reworked with electronic pistons, and the church added digital features in 2009.
“We welcome all music lovers to this program,” said the Rev. Anne Harris, priest-in-charge at the church, which is 175 years old this year.
“Some of what Steve will play sometimes accompanies our services, and the other items are part of the organ repertoire. We are delighted to have Steve offer this program for everyone,” said Harris.
St. Paul’s Episcopal Church is located at 318 College St. in downtown Columbus.
