The Mississippi Theatre Association (MTA) will sponsor a one and a half day workshop and professional development opportunity for teachers, community theater leaders and volunteers on Oct. 5-6 in Columbus at Mississippi University for Women.
The workshop will allow teachers to learn new, efficient ways to teach theater and to assist in arts integration with other disciplines. It will provide a way for community leaders and volunteers to learn more about a variety of areas that will benefit their theater programs, as well as an opportunity to share ideas from other volunteers from throughout the state.
The workshop will include a master class and an evening performance conducted by the Tut’Zanni Theatre Company, a physical theater company that travels the world performing and teaching workshops that combine commedia dell’arte, clown, puppetry, acrobatics, music, dance and other folk arts to create a stunning exploration of imagination and heart in today’s world.
“We are very excited to be partnering with MUW to provide this unique master class for attendees,” said Stephen Cunetto, MTA’s executive director. He added “Tut’Zanni will also do a public performance at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 5 at the Cromwell Theatre on the MUW campus.
In addition to the master class, the workshop will provide a way to learn more about theater arts from professionals. Topics will range from teaching creative writing, developing a Broadway style playbill, using social media to engage audiences, stage makeup techniques and the fundamentals of blocking. Community theater members and secondary teachers will also have roundtable discussions to assist in networking and sharing of ideas.
The registration fee is $40 for both days and $25 for one-day attendees. Interested participants can view the workshop agenda and register online at mta-online.org.
The mission of MTA is to foster appreciation of and participation in youth, college, community, high school, professional and university theater in Mississippi by sponsoring festivals, workshops and retreats; communicating with members and the public; acting as an advocate to government agencies, business and the public; recognizing excellence in performance and production; and sanctioning representatives to regional festivals.
