An opening reception Friday, April 16, marks the official opening of Mississippi University for Women”s 2010 Senior Exhibition at the Eugenia Summer Gallery in the Art and Design Building on campus.
The reception from 5-7:30 p.m. follows an artists” talk at 4:30 p.m., and also marks the opening of MUW”s homecoming weekend.
The exhibit is a time-honored tradition of celebrating the culmination of hard work and dedication of seniors graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts.
The artists
Featured seniors are Teri Lynn Hubbard of Batesville; Kristen Kiaskala of Starkville; Louis Mutch, originally of Spokane, Wash., now residing in Columbus; and Billy Nickoles of Columbus. The variety of work includes photography, graphic design, illustration and printmaking.
Graphic design is Hubbard”s primary medium. Often incorporating text, she presents her ideas in personal as well as commercial work, such as product packaging, Web design and event marketing.
“I strongly believe there is something exciting in creating a visually pleasing design using nothing but various texts placed together,” she sates.
As an illustrator, Kiaskala uses her minor in biology to create detailed illustrations of the human organ systems, advancing her goal to become a medical illustrator.
“The inside of the human body is fascinating, and I want to bring that interest and beauty to life with my illustrations,” says the student, who plans to continue her studies at either University of Illinois at Chicago or at the Medical College of Georgia.
Mutch, a photography major and U.S. Air Force veteran, will show his works involving portraiture. The husband and father of three is also a serious cyclist. While attending MUW, he was involved in a tragic bicycle accident. He has come back to his studies with a new outlook, to “guide the eye of the beholder to the gems of beauty that exist right in front of them, which they usually overlook.”
Nickoles grew up in Columbus and first attended MUW right out of the Navy in 1986, but did not complete his degree at that time. After originally pursuing graphic design, he found his true medium in printmaking and has won several awards, including a Best of Show in 2009. His abstract prints of historical buildings he admires blends his passion for art history and appreciation of architecture with his art.
The Fine Arts Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Art and Design Building is located next to the Stark Recreation Center on campus. For more information, contact the department at 662-329-7341 or 329-7291, or email [email protected].
