There”s always something interesting going on at the Columbus-Lowndes Public Library — and not only for children. Two free summer programs soon to begin are “Be Creative @ Your Library!” for youngsters age 5-12, and “Master the Art of Reading” for adults 18 and up.
Public Service Librarian Brenda Durrett is excited about the adult program exploring the world of art, books and more each Tuesday evening June 2 through June 23, from 5:15-6:15 p.m.
Gardeners especially should enjoy the green thumb focus on Mississippi flowers, how to make a topiary, and guest speakers such as Jeff Wilson, area horticulture agent with the Mississippi State University Extension Service.
“We”ve got lot of great door prizes to give out, too,” Durrett enthused. And don”t be surprised to find scavenger hunts, crossword puzzles or bingo incorporated into the weekly gatherings.
”Be Creative” for kids
Erin Busbea will oversee the children”s summer reading program each Tuesday in June, from 2-3 p.m.
“This program is designed to motivate children to read; we really want to develop a positive attitude about books and reading,” said the youth services coordinator, who has been with the local library since May 2008. “It”s also designed to maintain and improve reading skills while children are out of school.”
Innovative, child-friendly programs on biodiversity, transportation and creative expression will engage the imagination. Prizes — including large art sets, sidewalk chalk, Play-Doh sets, puzzles and more — will be given out during June. “Our door prizes will revolve around the creative side of our theme,” noted Busbea. The four-week program will conclude June 23 with an awards day, with special guest “Inky, the clown.”
At branches, too
The library”s Caledonia branch will hold “Be Creative” reading programs on Thursdays from June 4-July 9 for children in kindergarten through sixth grade. Weekly highlights include “Music Creativity Day,” “Strumming Along,” “Myrtle the Turtle” and “Mother Goose.”
The Children”s Summer Library Program will also be held at the Crawford Public Library, and in Artesia, in the Artesia Community Center.
Registration for summer programs begins May 18 and continues through June 8. For information and for specific days and times of branch programs, contact Durrett or Busbea at 662-329-5300, or visit www.lowndes.lib.ms.us.
