There is a competitive race at the top of the Southeastern Conferenceís Eastern Division. At 7-3, Kentucky and Tennessee were expected to compete for an Eastern Division title. But first-year coach Darrin Horn has helped South Carolina (7-3) become the surprise of the league.

The Mississippi State menís basketball team hasnít had the kind of start to the second half of the Southeastern Conference season it wanted. MSU opened SEC play with victories against Arkansas, Alabama, and Vanderbilt and finished the first half of the league slate 6-2. The second eight hasnít started so great for the Bulldogs.

 

 

Bumphis regains eligibility

A minor issue that kept Mississippi State signee Chad Bumphis from being eligible for nearly two months has been resolved. MSU asked the NCAA to reinstate Bumphis, a four-star wide receiver from Tupelo, after he was involved in a secondary rules violation with former football coach Sylvester Croom.

It is a diverse group. The Mississippi State womenís tennis team has players from Slovakia, Russia, Namibia, and Eupora. That melting pot of talent is 4-0 for the second consecutive season. The Lady Bulldogs have gotten off to that start seven times.

If MSU feels a tinge of anxiety being on the bubble for the NCAA tournament, coach Renee Ladnerís Ole Miss womenís basketball team has a host of butterflies as it enters the stretch run. The Rebels can quiet some of that uneasiness at 8 tonight (Fox Sports Net South) when they play host to Mississippi State at Tad Smith Coliseum.

 

 

Mitchell, LSU outlast Varnado, MSU

STARKVILLE ó Jarvis Varnado had a career night Wednesday for the Mississippi State menís basketball team. It was nothing compared to what Tasmin Mitchell did for LSU. Varnado scored a career-high 31 points, but Mitchell had a career-high 41 to lead the Tigers to a 97-94 victory in double overtime in front of a crowd of 9,021 at Humphrey Coliseum.

Mississippi State point guard Dee Bost moved into elite status Monday. Bost learned from MSU officials he had become the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the second time this season.
