Heritage Academy has promoted Brad Butler to be its new football coach. The 31-year-old Butler accepted the promotion Monday after being Heritage Academy’s offensive line coach this past season.

The Alabama Crimson Tide want to be able to deliver a knockout blow. It did not happen Thursday when Alabama lost to Vanderbilt 79-74 in Nashville, Tenn. After pulling to within 76-74 after a 3-point field goal by Andrew Steele with 3 minutes, 13 seconds left in the game, the Crimson Tide let the Commodores off the hook. Alabama (13-9, 3-5 Southeastern Conference) gets another opportunity for a road victory at noon today (WCBI) at LSU, and interim coach Philip Pearson wants his team to be ready in case another tight game develops.
CALEDONIA –– It’s never too early to execute the fundamentals. The little things like baserunning, communicating on catching high pop ups, throwing strikes, and knowing what you’re supposed to do when fielding a bunt were magnified Saturday in the Caledonia Jamboree at Tommy Smith Field.
STEENS — The Hebron Christian basketball teams will have to make room for new hardware in the trophy case on Monday. The Hebron Christian girls used a balanced scoring attack to beat Calhoun Academy 46-38 in the Class 1A-District 3 championship game at Immanuel Christian on Saturday. The Hebron boys then had to work overtime Saturday night to earn a 53-47 victory against Immanuel.
Mississippi State senior forward Robin Porter is living up to her words. Last October at the Southeastern Conference Media Basketball Media Days in Birmingham, Ala., Porter talked about how Mississippi State senior guard Marneshia Richard kept her motivated.

STARKVILLE –– To a man who has given much to Mississippi State University for 50 years after his college basketball career ended, the school returned the favor to Bailey Howell on Saturday. Howell’s No. 52 jersey was retired at halftime of Mississippi State’s game against Arkansas. He is the first player in school history to have his jersey retired.
STARKVILLE -- Mississippi State football coach Dan Mullen said the challenges of recruiting in the Southeastern Conference are real. Mullen, who was the offensive coordinator at the University of Florida before coming to MSU, said it is not easy to be one of the league’s 12 programs competing for the nation’s best prep and junior college prospects.

After having open heart surgery two months ago, Hamilton High School baseball coach Lewis Earnest will get a chance Saturday to see if he’s ready to return to coaching this season. Earnest’s Hamilton Lions are scheduled to play in a jamboree at Caledonia High School’s Tommy Smith Field. The games will prepare the Lions for their season opener Feb. 13 against Hatley in the Monroe County Tournament.
STARKVILLE — On a night in the Southeastern Conference when a coach and a player reached 1,000, the Mississippi State women’s basketball team was more than happy to finish No. 17. Alexis Rack scored a team-high 14 points and MSU made 13 of 14 free throws down the stretch Thursday to beat No. 20 Vanderbilt 66-61 before a crowd of 672 at Humphrey Coliseum.

Arkansas men’s basketball coach John Pelphrey knows it will take an outstanding effort out of his team at 2 p.m. Saturday (WCBI) to beat the Mississippi State Bulldogs at Humphrey Coliseum. Pelphrey has already witnessed what the Bulldogs can do when they’re not at their best. Mississippi State beat Arkansas 70-56 on Jan 10 in Fayetteville, Ark.
The University of Alabama men’s basketball team may have to stay in a zone. It wasn’t a hot offense but the team’s defense that Alabama interim head coach Philip Pearson said helped his team get its latest victory, a 75-70 decision against Georgia.
ALICEVILLE, Ala. — When Donald Prince suffered a season-ending injury, he didn’t know what the future would hold for him on a football field. The running back from Aliceville High School in Aliceville, Ala., wondered if he would get a scholarship after he tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee during the first quarter of the fourth game of the season.
