Columbus Speedway to play host to action Saturday
Columbus Speedway will be back in action this Saturday with the final weekly racing series points event of 2010.
The “Baddest Bullring in the South” will feature the Commercial Dispatch Super Late Models, NeSmith Late Model, Street Stocks, Open Wheel Modifieds, and Mini Stocks.
The pit gate will open at 3 p.m., and the grandstand gates will open at 5 p.m. The driver”s meeting is slated for 6 p.m., with action at 7 p.m. Grandstand admission is $10. Students ages 11-11, active military, and seniors $8, and kids 10 and under free. Pit admission is $25.

Immanuel Christian soccer players recognized
STEENS — The Immanuel Christian girls soccer team had four players earn All-District honors Wednesday.
Coach Ray Campbell said Taylor Baudoin, Meghan Cooper, Taylor Kidder, and Rachel Strickland were named to the team.
The Lady Rams (11-4) had their season end Tuesday with a 10-1 loss to Laurel Christian in the first round of the Mississippi Association of Independent Schools Class A playoffs. Tori Fitzgerald scored the team”s only goal. Campbell said Kidder played an outstanding game as goalkeeper and stopped “an unbelievable number” of shots that “could have made the final scorer a lot worse.”
West Lowndes beats West Oktibbeha
Javontrae Williams rushed for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while Javarious Ellis rushed for 104 yards and had a two-point conversion Tuesday to lead the West Lowndes Junior High football team to a 20-8 victory against West Oktibbeha.
Tyler Brown rushed for 19 yards and a touchdown, and Daniel Davis had three carries for 17 yards.
Williams led the team with nine tackles, while Ellis had seven. Roy Miller, Krayveon Harris, Kaylon Harris, Davis, Joey Winford, and Jaelyn Witherspoon each had three tackles.
West Lowndes will play at J.Z. George at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Last week, West Lowndes defeated East Oktibbeha. The winning team was incorrect in Wednesday”s edition.
USM”s leading rusher out for East Carolina game
HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss football coach Larry Fedora has announced that running back Desmond Johnson has been suspended for Saturday”s Conference USA showdown against East Carolina.
In a statement from the school, Fedora says Johnson was suspended for a “violation of team policy.”
Johnson, a 5-foot-11, 195-pound sophomore, leads the Golden Eagles with 296 rushing yards and three touchdowns. He”s also caught a team high 14 passes.
Southern Miss (4-1, 1-0) will play host to East Carolina (2-2, 2-0) at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Roberts Stadium.
Alabama
Former football players arrested on drug charges
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Former University of Alabama football standout DJ Hall and former walk-on Darwin Salaam have been arrested on drug charges.
The Tuscaloosa News reports that the two were arrested Wednesday at a hotel after police responded to complaints that guests were smoking marijuana in a room. Each was charged with possession of marijuana and another controlled substance, and were released on bonds of $30,000 each.
Police did not return a call Thursday.
Hall was a star receiver for the Crimson Tide from 2004 through 2007. He holds several school records and is the only Alabama receiver ever to have two 1,000-yard seasons.
Salaam was a walk-on receiver who played at Stillman College before transferring to Alabama.
A court clerk said there is no paperwork yet indicating whether either Hall or Salaam have attorneys.
