David Boykin will coach in Class 4A, Region 4, District 4 this season.
The only change is he will do his work at a different school.
On Tuesday, the Louisville School District approved the hiring of Boykin as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach for the Louisville High School football team.
Boykin, who is still working under contract at Caledonia High School, guided Caledonia High to an 0-10 finish in 2009 in his second stint as the program”s head coach. The approval of his hiring paves the way for Boykin to rejoin new Louisville High football coach M.C. Miller. Boykin and Miller worked for three years together at Noxubee County.
Boykin said the opportunity to work for a coach like Miller and at a program like Louisville High”s, which has won seven state championships, was too good to pass up.
“I just think this is a better opportunity for me and my family,” Boykin said. “I am a football coach, and I want to put myself and my family in the bost position where we can be successful.”
Boykin was re-hired at Caledonia in June 2009. He coached the Confederates to 3-7 records in 2006 and 2007. He replaced Jason Forrester as coach.
Prior to his return to Caledonia, Boykin served as a volunteer offensive line coach for Mark Hudspeth at the University of North Alabama.
Boykin worked as offensive coordinator for Miller at Noxubee County. He is excited about the opportunity to work for a coach like Miller, who likes his teams to play aggressive defense. He said that brand of football is bound to help the offense he will coach.
“We have always been really close,” Boykin said of he and Miller. “I am going to enjoy working for him again and working with him.”
Boykin said he also is eager to join a community that “eats, breathes, and sleeps” football like the fans of Louisville High. He said his challenge is to help the program maintain a high level.
“They have won the state championship two out of the past three years and it was too good of an opportunity to turn down,” Boykin said. “There are great kids and great people in Caledonia. But when an opportunity presents itself like this it doesn”t feel right if you don”t take it.”
Caledonia lost to Louisville 43-6 last season. For the season, the Confederates were outscored 363-34 and were shut out five times. The program has had only one winning season (6-5 in 2004) in the past 16 years.
Assistant coach Morgan Mansfield is guiding Caledonia through its final days of spring practice. Caledonia will play against Nettleton and Vardaman on Thursday in its spring jamboree.
Louisville will play host to West Point and South Panola on Friday.
