REFORM, Ala. — It was all about the defense Friday night, as the Pickens County High School football team defeated Aliceville 6-0 in an Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) non-district matchup.
Aljaron Edwards hit Elliott Petty for a 29-yard touchdown midway in the third quarter for the only score.
Aliceville had 106 yards on 48 plays, while Pickens County had 96 yards on 49 plays.
For Aliceville, Kavon McGraw ran 13 times for 78 yards. The Yellow Jackets were 1-for-14 through the air. Ricco Pittman led the defense with 12 tackles. Avery Bishop added three sacks.
Pickens County was 9-for-17 passing. Edwards was 6-for-12 for 79 yards. The game-winner was the only catch for Petty.
Aliceville (3-2, 3-0 region) will play at Hatch (2-3, 1-1) in an AHSAA Class 2A, Region 4 matchup Friday night, while Pickens County (4-1, 2-0) will visit Brilliant (1-5, 0-3) in an AHSAA Class 1A, Region 5 matchup.

Berry 19: At Vernon, Alabama, Isaac Whittle rushed for three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to their fourth-straight win.
Whittle scored on runs of 22, 1, and 31 yards. Rick Rodgers threw a 31-yard pass to Charles Wise. Taye Buchanan, Jacob Perrizin, and Thomas Esk added rushing scores.
Lamar County had 473 yards offense, including 286 rushing. Rodgers was 10-for-11 for 187 yards.
Lamar County (4-2, 3-0) will play host to Red Bay (3-2, 1-1) Friday night in AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 play.
n Winfield 21, Sulligent 7: At Winfield, Alabama, the Blue Devils saw a season-opening four-game winning streak snapped on the road.
For Sulligent, Ethan Carter scored on a 32-yard run. The Bulldogs were held to 190 yards and 11 first downs.
Walker Junkin scored on touchdown runs of 47 and 2 yards, while Drew Blackburn added a 3-yard rushing score for Winfield (3-2).
Sulligent (4-1, 2-0) will play host to Mars Hill Bible (4-2, 2-1) in an AHSAA Class 2A, Region 8 game Friday night.
n South Lamar 14,
Curry 8: At Jasper, Alabama, the Class 1A Stallions scored late to nip the Class 5A Yellowjackets.
Jarrett Bryant caught a 78-yard touchdown pass from Jack Dowdle with less than six minutes to play to lift the Stallions. South Lamar built a 7-0 lead on an 18-yard run by Herachio Washington before trailing 8-7 at halftime.
South Lamar had 357 yards, including 227 rushing. Washington had a team-high 97 yards rushing.
Austin Keasler and Bryant had 12 tackles to lead the Stallions. Grant Williams had seven tackles and a fumble recovery.
South Lamar (5-1, 3-0) will return to AHSAA Class 1A, Region 1 play by Friday night when it plays host to Marion County (1-4, 1-1).
n Pickens Academy 20, Newton County Academy 6: At Carrollton, Alabama, a second-half shutout lifted the Pirates to a win at home.
For Pickens Academy (4-2), Seth Peeks scored on touchdown runs of 7 and 38 yards. Grady McGlawn caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from Hamner Allen. Allen had a two-point conversion run.
Peeks ran 13 times for 141 yards, while Riley Harcrow ran 12 times for 50 yards. Harcrow led the defense with 12 tackles, while Lee Acker had two interceptions.
Pickens Academy will play at Southern Academy (3-3) in an Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) non-district matchup Friday night.
