M.C Miller believes the Noxubee County High School football program has its man.
Tonight, that man, Tyrone Shorter, is expected to take Miller”s place and become the head football coach at Noxubee County.
Shorter”s hiring is expected to be approved at the Noxubee County School District School Board meeting.
Shorter worked the past 12 years as an assistant coach to Miller, who left Noxubee County to accept the head football coaching job at Harrison Central. He reconsidered that decision last month and was hired as the head football coach at Louisville High School.
Miller led the Tigers to the Class 4A state title games in 2007-08 and a championship in ”08. He had a 184-77 record at the school.
The veteran coach expects Shorter, who served as his defensive coordinator the past four or five years, will do a great job.
“That will be a great hire,” Miller said. “He already is in the system, he knows the players, and they couldn”t ask for a better guy.”
Miller said Shorter is the same kind of coach as he is, one who gives his players the game plan and then expects them to perform. He allows them to do their thing but gets on them if they don”t follow instruction or do what they have been coached to do. He feels Shorter will be the same way.
“If the kids mess up he won”t cut them any slack,” Miller said. “He is going to get after them and make them play.”
Miller said Louisville, which is with Noxubee County in Class 4A, Division 4, District 4, will play the Tigers in the third week of October this season. He said it will be unusual going against his former assistant coach and his former players, but he is looking forward to the opportunity.
“It is going to be hard to play them,” Miller said. “We”re going to have to get the guys up to play them because we know what Noxubee County can do and what kind of coaches they have.”
n Miller confirmed that the Wildcats will take part in a jamboree at 5 p.m. May 14 at Louisville High that will feature defending Class 6A state champion South Panola and defending Class 5A state champion West Point.
“You have to play the best to know what you have,” Miller said. “South Panola is the best in 6A and West Point is the best in 5A, so you need to play them to know what you need to work on in the summer and in the fall.”
