Some of the nation’s brightest young golfers have converged on the Golden Triangle area for this week.
Play begins today in the 109th Southern Amateur Golf Championship, presented by Duck Head attire, which is being held at Old Waverly Golf Club in West Point.
The first groups were scheduled to tee off at 7:30 this morning, while the group is set to get going at 2:30 p.m.
The four-day tournament runs through Saturday.
One of the top five amateur tournaments on an annual basis, this year’s field includes players from 20 states and five foreign countries.
Defending NCAA champion Bryson DeChambeau, a junior from Southern Methodist University, is in the field, as well as SGA National AM of the Month from April Scottie Scheffler.
This event has been held at prestigious courses such as the Colonial (Memphis, Tennessee), Pinehurst, Sea Island, Bay Hill, East Lake, Lake Nona, Atlanta Atlantic Club, The Honors Course, Dunes Club, The Homestead and Shoal Creek.
While this is the first Southern Amateur at Old Waverly, the prestigious course has played host previously to the Southern Junior and as well as the U.S. Women’s Open.
