VERNON, Ala. — A projected offensive shootout in Alabama High School Activities Association Class 2A, Region 4 on Friday night delivered for only one team.
The Lamar County High School football team racked up 466 yards of offense and remained alive in the hunt for the region crown with a 44-14 victory against Aliceville at George Bell Stadium.
The Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1 region) broke away from a 6-6 second-quarter tie by scoring the next 38 points. Lamar County has scored 40 or more points four times this season, and has won three straight games in the region.
Lamar County held Aliceville to 132 yards and forced three turnovers. The Yellow Jackets (3-3, 3-1) entered the game averaging 36 points.
Lamar County quarterback Dallas Cockerham had 20 carries for 108 yards on 20 carries, including two 4-yard touchdowns. Cockerham also hit Timothy Harton on a 36-yard scoring strike with 31 seconds left in the half. That score and subsequent two-point conversion rush by Ty Waldon pushed the Bulldogs to a 22-6 halftime advantage.
Also for the Bulldogs, Alex Wheeler had a 7-yard touchdown rush, Kendall Smith had a 6-yard touchdown rush, and Landon Williams had a 47-yard touchdown rush. Smith also had a two-point rush, while Cockerham hit Jeremy Denton on another conversion.
Aliceville received an 8-yard rushing touchdown from Christopher Crowell and a 3-yard rushing score from Stephon Dunner.
Lamar County rushed 62 times for 385 yards, and had an interception for its only turnover.
Both teams are tied with Hale County for second place in the region. Unbeaten in region play Oakman is the region leader. All teams have three region games remaining.
Lamar County will play host to Cold Springs and Aliceville will play host to Hatch in region action next week.
n Oakman 21, Sulligent 13: At Oakman, Ala., the Wildcats moved to 4-0 in Class 2A, Region 4 play but not until after winning a hard-fought contest against the Blue Devils.
Playing perhaps its best defensive game of the season, Sulligent (1-5, 1-3) hung tough before seeing its region losing streak stretch to three.
Sulligent quarterback Ladaberick Coleman threw two touchdown passes, one to Rocky Sides from 17 yards and one to Deion Jenkins from 6 yards.
Oakman (6-1, 4-0) quarterback Jase Trotter threw for 147 yards and one touchdown. Wesley Austin also scored on a 43-yard touchdown run. The Wildcats also added a defensive score.
Region play will resume next week for each team. Sulligent will play host to Marion, while Oakman will play host to Hale County in a battle for the region lead.
n Pickens County 28, Parrish 0: At Reform, Ala., Jermarcus Brown had quite a night for the unbeaten Tornadoes in Class 1A, Region 5 play.
Brown rushed for 315 yards and four touchdowns as the Tornadoes blew past another group of Tornadoes. The sophomore back scored on runs of 88, 37, 81, and 14 yards.
Pickens County (6-0, 4-0) posted its third shutout in region play. The Tornadoes have allowed only one touchdown in four region games, and 52 points this season. Chris Hill led the defense with 12 tackles and three sacks. Terrien Steele added 10 tackles and four sacks.
Pickens County will remain in region play next week when it travels to Hubbertville. The Tornadoes can clinch a playoff spot with one more victory in their final three region games.
n Hubbertville 41, South Lamar 7: At Millport, Ala., the Stallions are still searching for their first victory after their Class 1A, Region 5 loss Friday night.
The lone score for South Lamar (0-6, 0-4) came on a 5-yard touchdown rush by Herschel Smith. Canaan Fleming paced the Stallions with 75 receiving yards on 10 catches. Jason Lawson led South Lamar with 13 tackles, while Fleming added four tackles and an interception.
Aaron Dillard and Corey Stewart each had two touchdowns for Hubbertville (4-2, 2-2). Dillard ran for a team-high 105 yards on seven carries.
South Lamar will play host to Marion County in another region contest Friday night.
n Pickens Academy 28, Marengo Academy 16: At Carrollton, Ala., The Pirates continued their unbeaten season Friday night by securing the Alabama Independent School Association’s Class A, Region 2 championship.
For the Pirates (7-0, 5-0), quarterback Josh Lewis ran 16 times for 183 yards and two touchdowns. Lewis scored on runs of 1 and 84 yards and threw a 17-yard touchdown pass to Sam Beachler.
Joel Pratt added 91 yards on nine rushes for the Pirates. Pratt scored on a 40-yard run.
Pickens Academy will complete its region schedule next week when it plays at Meadowview Christian.
