STARKVILLE — Starkville High School’s Kate Mattox was the only winner Saturday in a bunch of top-10 finishes by local competitors at the Mississippi State University High School Track and Field Invitational.
Mattox won the 1,600 meters with a time of 5 minutes, 34.85 seconds. She also took sixth in the 800 (2:34.49).
The Columbus High girls were the highest-placing local team (11th, 25 points). Southwind won the meet with 61 points.
Noxubee County (12th, 18 points) was the highest-finishing local boys team. Houston won the meet with 78.5 points.
New Hope’s Mercedes Mattix was fifth in the 100 (12.59 seconds), Columbus’ Sky Samuel was fifth in the 200 (26.00), Columbus’ Quaneisha Aaron was 10th in the 400 (1 minute, 3.49 seconds), Starkville’s Walker Mattox was eighth in the 3,200 (12:51.35), New Hope’s Kennedi Sanders was eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.91), Columbus’ Kashaeyla Brooks was second in the 300 hurdles (48.01), Aberdeen’s Precious Everett was fifth in the 300 hurdles (49.72), Noxubee County’s Jalisa Tate was 10th in the 300 hurdles (51.40), the Columbus 4×100 relay team of ShaRissa Spencer, Kiandria Patterson, Brooks, and Samuel was fifth (51.47), the New Hope 4×100 team of Shanice Nottage, Shanae Hunt, Lashaya Davis, and Mattix was sixth (51.50), the Columbus 4×200 team of Aaron, Cocavia Millsap, Kameron Corrothers, and Samuel was fourth (1:46.71), the Noxubee County 4×200 team of Moesha Brandy, Dewisha Clark, Tradeshia Conner, and Gabrielle Rice was 10th (1:49.59), the Columbus 4×400 team of Aaron, Brooks, Corrothers, and Spencer was fifth (4:20.22), Noxubee County’s Tate was 10th in the long jump (15 feet, 5 inches) and seventh in the triple jump (34-0), and Columbus’ Spencer was ninth in the triple jump (33-4).
In the boys competition, Noxubee County’s Terrence Barron was ninth in the 200 (22.86), West Point’s Aries Williams was seventh in the 400 (52.53), Columbus’ Byerson Cockrell was 10th in the 400 (52.69), Starkville’s Damien Grady was seventh in the 800 (2:05.73) and fifth in the 1,600 (4:53.67), Noxubee County’s Charles Hughes was fifth in the 110 hurdles (14.90) and fourth in the 300 hurdles (40.91), Columbus’ 4×100 team of Damian Baker, Cockrell, Quan Latham, and Roshad Meeks was third (43.29), Noxubee County’s 4×100 team of Barron, Darrell Robinson, Ladarrell Hunt, and Vernon Scott was fourth (43.31), Starkville’s 4×100 team of Qu’Various Robertson, Tommie Stinson, Scottie Pittman, and Gabe Myles was seventh (44.17), Noxubee County’s 4×200 team of Barron, Jamichael Grace, Hunt, and Robinson was fifth (1:31.12), Starkville’s 4×200 team of Pittman, Myles, Jacoby Smith, and Robertson was eighth (1:32.61), Starkville’s 4×400 team of Smith, JR Tomlinson, Kamau Bostic, and Jalan Catledge was fourth (3:30.62), Columbus’ Alex Lipscolm tied for ninth in the high jump (6-0), Starkville’s Catledge was sixth in the triple jump (13.74 meters), and Columbus’ Devin Barry was 10th in the discus (116-10).
