The Starkville High School girls basketball season ended Tuesday with a 62-59 loss at Center Hill in the first round of the Mississippi High School Activities Association Class 5A North State tournament.
Senior guard Brittany Brown (game-high 25 points) helped Starkville take a 12-10 in the opening quarter. Center Hill took control in the second quarter, going on a 19-7 run to take a 29-19 halftime lead.
“We had an issue where Brittany Brown picks up her second foul in the second quarter and we just simply couldn’t score anymore,” Starkville coach Kristie Williams said. “We got down by as many as 19 and fought all the way back for a chance to win.”
Senior guard Jasmine Golden led Center Hill (25-5) with 23 points. Her cousin, Kiara Golden, had 12.
Sophomore Imane Montgomery (12 points) and Janay Townsel (10) also reached double figures for Starkville.
“I’ve always seemed to have a great senior class in terms of leadership, and the 2012 class was no different,” Williams said. “I’ve always said Class 5A girls basketball is the best in the state, and for us to be one of eight teams still playing tonight is an accomplishment for this program. I’m proud of how my girls never gave up and left no doubt in their final game if they’d given their best effort.”
Center Hill will play Lanier on Friday at Southaven High.
