HAMILTON — Dakota Brasher passed for 51 yards and threw one touchdown, and K.J. Woods rushed for 202 yards and scored four touchdowns Friday night to help the Ackerman High School football team beat Hamilton 41-35 in double overtime in a Class 2A, Region 2 game.
The victory snapped Hamilton’s seven-game winning streak and helped Ackerman win its sixth in a row and clinch and region title.
Hamilton senior quarterback Zarratt Sims was 8 of 14 for 143 yards, two touchdowns and one interception. He had a 57-yard touchdown pass to Dion Howard. Quinshay Heard ran for 51 yards and two touchdowns of 5 and 38 yards for Hamilton.
Ackerman controlled the ball by keeping it on the ground with Woods. “When we needed him the most he made the most plays” Ackerman coach Adam Dillinger said.
Ackerman (8-3, 5-0) was in position to go for two at the end of regulation when both teams traded timeouts and Dillinger decided to go for one to go into overtime. His thoughts were to draw Hamilton offsides to get the shorter yards, but he said Hamilton (9-2, 4-1) was disciplined and didn’t jump.
In the first overtime, Brasher threw an 11-yard pass to Dylan Bagwell to go ahead 35-28. On Hamilton’s first possession, Sims scored on a 10-yard run. In the second overtime Hamilton had the ball first, but Brasher intercepted Sims on the third down. Woods’ 3-yard run gave Ackerman the victory.
After the game, Hamilton coach Ray Weeks told his players “there is a lot of football left that I would trade a division championship for state championship.”
Both teams will open the playoffs at home. Hamilton will play host to Hollandale-Simmons at 7 p.m. Friday.
