STARKVILLE — Joseph MacGown, Kamau Bostic, and Damian Grady earned top-six finishes Saturday to lead the Starkville High School boys cross country to team to a first-place finish at the Starkville Invitational at the Mississippi State Horse Park.
In the girls race, Starkville High’s Kate Mattox won with a time of 15:06.25 on the 4-Kilometer course.
MacGown led the trio of Yellow Jackets with a fourth-place time of 17 minutes, 15.24 seconds on the 5-K course. Bostic and Grady were right behind in fifth and sixth with times of 17:52.92 and 17:24.12, respectively.
Etna Musser (12th, 18:09.87) and Stuart Woomer (15th, 18:17.74) rounded out the team’s top five finishers to help it edge Tupelo (42-44) for the team title.
Tupelo’s Andrew White won the race with a time of 16:57.91.
Egan Pelton led the Mississippi School for Math and Science with a 66th-place time of 21:51.18.
Sylvanus Johnson finished 71st (22:21.11) to lead New Hope, which finished 10th with 275 points. Delaney Watkins (92nd, 24:20.67), Bryan Vogel (93rd, 24:21.38), Whyatt Foster (102nd, 25:12.99), and Taylor Collins (107th, 26:13.79) rounded out the Trojans’ top five.
On the girls side, Walker Mattox (seventh, 16:10.57), Abigail Arinder (ninth, 16:17.33), Shanika Musser (19th, 17:10.88), and Anna Jackson (31st, 18:22.24) rounded out Starkville’s top five. The finishers helped the Lady Yellow Jackets take second with 62 points. Tupelo won the race with 40 points.
Sam Vogel led New Hope with a 42nd-place finish (18:55.42). Sydney Brocksmith (55th, 19:32.41), Taylor Brown (91st, 22:14.17), Ana Fondren (112nd, 26:35.64), and Samantha Fields (116th, 27:33.40) rounded out the top five for the Lady Trojans, who took ninth with 282 points.
Emma Thompson finished 81st (21:29.31) for Mississippi School for Math and Science.
