WEIR — A two-point pass play from Codie McKee to Brett Flora with 1 minute, 49 seconds remaining lifted the East Webster High School football team to a 15-14 win against Weir on Friday night.
The Wolverines (2-1) continued their trend of exciting, low-scoring games with dramatic finishes. East Webster”s first win of the season was a 13-12 triumph against Vardaman.
Against Weir, McKee hit Deangelo Liggins for a 32-yard touchdown. The Wolverines then elected to try for the game-winning two-point conversion instead of tying the game with a kick.
“I am very proud of this group of kids,” East Webster coach Doug Wilson said. “They always believed we would find a way to win. I had confidence in our offense. That is why we tried the two-point conversion.”
Weir scored on its opening possession. A 1-yard touchdown run by J.R. Hall gave the hosts a 6-0 lead.
East Webster answered midway through the second quarter on a Monterrious Davis 5-yard run. A Tyler Crosby extra point gave East Webster a 7-6 halftime lead.
In the early stages of the third quarter, the Lions grabbed a 14-7 lead on a 12-yard touchdown rush from Hall and subsequent two-point conversion run.
Things stayed that way until East Webster moved 60 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
“The defensive effort was great,” Wilson said. “We had some young guys really step up. On offense, we were able to have some rhythm and had a couple of drives. The effort has been good. We are a young team, and you can tell these players are beginning to have more confidence.”
East Webster will travels Friday to Caledonia.
