DUBOIS, Pa. — The Mississippi University for Women’s baseball and softball teams stayed alive Tuesday at the United States Collegiate Athletic Association’s (USCAA) Small College World Series.
The W baseball team didn’t allow a three-hour weather delay to shake its focus. Despite the late start time, The W pulled out a 4-3 victory against Florida National in the third round.
Will Peters (8-2) pitched a complete game to push the Owls (21-14) took over pitching duties in The W’s second match-up against the Conquistadors. The Tallassee, Alabama, native allowed only four hits. He walked two and struck out six.
Leon “Trey” Petite went 3-for-3 with two RBIs, a double, and a run scored to lead the 10-hit attack. Former Oak Hill Academy standout Heath Ford had an RBI. Former Heritage Academy standout Brandon Jones also had a hit.
The W opened the scoring in the bottom of the third. Petite scored the first run on a sacrifice fly by Ford. Prince Tolbert scored the second run on a single to left field by Damain Benefield.
In the sixth, Petite doubled to right-center field to score Lukas Murphy and Logan Gruetter.

Pinch hitter Enrique Stinga hit a three-run in the seventh for the Conquistadors (13-31), but Peters recorded a swinging strikeout to end the game.
The W will play Selma University at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in an elimination round semifinal.
Hopper delivers another fine effort in circle
DUBOIS, Pa. — Former Caledonia High School, Itawamba Community College, and Blue Mountain standout Cara Hopper threw 4 2/3 strong innings Tuesday to lead the Mississippi University for Women softball team to a 6-2 victory against Penn State Schuylkill in the third round of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Small College World Series.
“They played another amazing game,” The W coach Tatjana Matthews said. “Tiffany Phillips started well on the mound for us and Cara came in and finished strong. She stepped up when we needed her to. I am proud of our fight at the plate and how we did it.”
Hopper, a senior, entered the game in the third inning in relief of Tiffany Phillips and didn’t allow a hit to help The improve to 21-18. She walked one and struck out 11 strikeouts.
Katlyn Duke, Carolyn “Kendall” Wilkinson, Kristen Martin, and Brianna Duquette had two hits for the Owls. Duke, a former standout at Neshoba Central High School, also had a triple and a game-high of four RBIs. Anna Lloyd scored two runs.
The W jumped ahead of the Lions 3-0 with a run in the first and two runs in the second on a triple by Duke.
Penn State scored two runs in the third on a double to cut the deficit to 3-2.
In the fifth, the Owls added three more runs. Duquette scored on a fielder’s choice and Lloyd and Bailee Watts scored on another hit by Duke.
The W will face NHTI (New Hampshire Technical Institute) at noon Wednesday.
