The Mississippi Singing Churchmen will be in concert at noon Tuesday, April 17 at First Baptist Church, 202 Seventh St. N., in Columbus.

The choir is comprised of ministers of music from Baptist churches across Mississippi. They have been called Mississippi's premier men's choir.

The group, under the direction of Milfred Valentine, has toured extensively, singing in more than 12 countries and in numerous foreign languages. Valentine is a respected conductor and music educator with more than 50 years' experience on the college level and in church music ministry.

Member Bobby Sanderson, minister of music at First Baptist Church, said, "Being a part of the Singing Churchmen has been one of the greatest joys of my ministry. The fellowship and camaraderie are unequaled. The heartfelt musicianship and the devotion to singing the songs of Jesus make the concerts some of the most powerful worship experiences around."

The Churchmen are accompanied by Slater Murphy, director of Church Music for Mississippi Baptists. Murphy is well-known in Columbus, having formerly served as a longtime minister of music at Columbus' Fairview Baptist Church.

Band and orchestra conductor David Young directs the instrumental ensemble that accompanies the Churchmen.

First Baptist Church Pastor Shawn Parker and Sanderson invite the entire community to this special noon performance. Admission is free. An offering will be taken to support the missions ministry of the Churchmen. Special recognition will be given to any area choral groups who attend.
