The Clay County Sheriff's Office has opened a homicide investigation after the bodies of two people from Tupelo were found in a vehicle on Dixie Road Tuesday.
Clay County Coroner Alvin Carter identified the victims as Kentario Boyd and Kenya Campbell, both 23, Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said.
Deputies received a 911 call about the vehicle, which was spotted on the edge of Dixie Road in a rural part of the county late Tuesday afternoon. Both victims were in the car and appeared to have suffered multiple gunshot wounds. Carter declared them dead at the scene.
A crew from the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation assisted with the investigation, Scott said.
While no arrests have been made, Scott said deputies are talking with "people of interest."
Scott said the victims were apparently close friends who may have had distant relatives in Clay County, but the CCSO is still investigating what they were doing in the area.
The victims' bodies are currently at the State Crime Lab in Jackson, Scott said, adding the autopsies would probably be Thursday morning.
