ALICEVILLE, Ala. — Aliceville High School football coach Charles Moody likes the versatility of his team.
In the first two weeks of the season, the Yellow Jackets have had a different offensive leader each time.
In the season-opening loss to rival Gordo, freshman quarterback Santiago Taylor threw for 220 yards and four touchdowns.
Last week, veteran Chris Crowell, a quarterback-turned-wide receiver, stole the show. He scored on a 1-yard run and on a 5-yard run and threw a two-point pass to Joe Robinson that gave the Yellow Jackets a nine-point lead in the third quarter.
“Crowell is a playmaker,” Moody said. “We have a great group of wide receivers, maybe the best in the state. All of them have good hands and can make things happen with the ball.”
Aliceville will try to find another playmaker at 7 p.m. Friday nigh when it takes on Alabama High School Athletic Association rival Sulligent in a Class 2A, Region 4 game.
Aliceville returns six starters on defense, led by junior defensive end Anfernee Mullins, senior linebacker Marquesze Marshal, and junior linebacker Jakari Garner. That experience showed last week in a 22-13 victory against Hale County. The Yellow Jackets held the Wildcats to 54 total yards in the second half.
Sulligent (0-2) has scored only 14 points in its first two games. The Blue Devils managed only 169 total yards in a 42-0 loss to Class 3A Hamilton in the week one. Sulligent lost to Cold Springs 20-14 last week.
“I was concerned about our offensive line,” Sulligent coach Scott Marchant said. “We have three new offensive linemen joining the two starters from last year. They have quite a learning curve, and we are confident they can pick it up.”
In other games featuring West Alabama team, Pickens Academy (2-0) will once again rely on the versatility of senior Josh Lewis on Friday when it plays host to Southern Academy. Lewis has 564 yards and seven touchdowns in the first two games. He has 26 rushing attempts for 232 yards and four touchdowns. He is 17 of 27 for 332 yards and three touchdown passes. He also has 18 tackles and has recovered two fumbles.
Lamar County (2-0) will look for its first 3-0 start since the 2011 season when it travels to Uniontown to take on R.C. Hatch (0-2) at Bobcat Stadium.
After playing its first two games on the road, Pickens County (2-0) will play its first home game against Lynn (1-1) at G.S. Spruill Stadium in Reform, Ala.
South Lamar (0-2) will look to end its 13-game losing streak with a road game at Brilliant (1-1).
