Prep Football Week 8: What to Watch For

Scott Walters

The balloons have been filled and the flowers ordered.

Columbus High School is set for Homecoming this weekend.

Now, the question is can the Falcons hold up their end of the deal with a victory against Horn Lake.

Yes, it is that time of year where every game matters. Some teams are fighting for playoff berths, while others are fighting for home-field advantage.

Isn't this fun?

Here are five things we will watch for in Week Eight:

Eagles or Falcons

1. Can Columbus climb to 3-0 in region play?

Columbus sent a major statement with its 33-9 region win at Tupelo Friday night.

Now, Columbus looks for a 3-0 start in region play by playing host to Horn Lake.

Horn Lake is last-place in the region. However, Columbus needs to focus on the task at hand and not look too far ahead.

Yellow Jackets or Hornets

2. Can Starkville also get to 3-0 in region play?

The answer here is yes.

Starkville High ran its region win streak to 10 games, dating back to 2013, with last Friday's 30-7 home win over Northwest Rankin.

This week, there will be no challenge, as Starkville should roll over winless Greenville.

After that, the challenges get steeper, with Warren Central, Madison Central and Clinton all upcoming.

Wildcats or Confederates

3. Can Caledonia survive the rigors of Class 4A, Region 4?

A year ago, Caledonia battled hard and found a way to get into the playoffs. This year, the region is even deeper and the challenge will be taller.

Louisville comes to Lowndes County Friday night. Caledonia has a chance in this one.

However, it has to shake off last Friday's loss to Houston quickly and play at a higher level.

Green Wave or Mustangs

4. Can the West Point offense keep clicking?

Even though the Class 5A, Region 1 record is at 1-1, West Point has topped 400 yards in consecutive weeks against region foes Oxford and Clarksdale.

West Point will look to continue where last week's 53-16 win over Clarksdale left off.

However, Center Hill is off to a 4-2 start, including region wins over Lewisburg and New Hope.

Center Hill will also be at home. However, stopping the Green Wave when rolling is difficult at best.

Patriots or other Patriots

5. Can Heritage Academy make the playoffs?

Heritage Academy faces a must-win Friday night when it travels to Winston Academy.

Heritage Academy has already dropped one district game and can't fall down 0-2.

Fortunately for Heritage Academy, Winston Academy is struggling and this should be a win.
