Some area teams are now down to four regular season games - yes, that's right - four games.
Is that not amazing?
It seems like last week teams were getting together for their first practices. Instead, the heat timeouts have come and gone for the year. Hopefully, the cooler weather has settled in. Now, we are set for the stretch run with playoff berths ready to be secured, some as early as this Friday night.
So, here we go with some winners for Week Eight...
Horn Lake at Columbus
Homecoming has arrived at Falcon Field. That means one thing, "More Falcon in a tux!"
Actually, it is also means a critical Class 6A, Region 1 matchup with Horn Lake. The Falcons take on the Eagles with hopes of going 3-0 in region play for the first time.
Columbus has shocked the region by knocking off DeSoto Central and Tupelo. The Falcons have worked on both the turnover problem and the penalty problem. The results have shown on the scoreboard.
Columbus has Horn Lake outmanned. In the past, the team would have still have to worked hard to pull out the win. These days, Columbus will make work of less teams much more quickly.
Columbus 45, Horn Lake 7
Louisville at Caledonia
After a tough loss to Houston in its Class 4A, Region 4 opener, Caledonia returns home to take on region heavyweight Louisville.
We know Caledonia is a much improved football team. After breaking the draught and making a long-awaited return to the playoffs a season ago, Caledonia is looking for a second straight playoff berth. To achieve that milestone, Caledonia will need to win some regions games against quality opposition.
With Noxubee County still looming on the schedule, Caledonia needs to tighten things up and start stockpiling the region wins as soon as possible.
Louisville 34, Caledonia 28
West Lowndes at Smithville
In what has to be a minor surprise, West Lowndes hits the road for Smithville in a battle between undefeated teams in Class 1A, Region 1.
West Lowndes saw its four-game win streak snapped with a loss to Heritage Academy. However, the Panthers are still in good shape in the region race with a 3-0 record.
Smithville is off to a 4-0 start. The Seminoles have been one of the heavyweights in this region for several years now. Meanwhile, West Lowndes is new to the party.
The big question in this contest will be whether or not West Lowndes can get the offense going. If it can, victory will be in site.
Smithville 14, West Lowndes 0
Noxubee County at Leake Central
After breaking a four-game losing streak, Noxubee County hits the road looking for a 2-0 start in Class 4A, Region 4 play. The Tigers have owned this region, with 17 straight wins, dating back to the 2011 season.
Noxubee County snapped its skid by winning over Kosicusko last week. The Tigers had a much better effort offensively and defensively. Noxubee County has also been in the midst of getting several injured players back into the starting lineup.
Noxubee County will still be considered a favorite in Class 4A, regardless of where they finish in the region race. However, the Tigers have owned this region and could greatly use the confidence lift that would come from this happening again.
Leake Central has a quality defense. However, the Gators will have their hands full trying to slow down the Tigers' offense.
Noxubee County 28, Leake Central 12
Leake Academy at Starkville Academy
Starkville Academy will be looking for its fourth straight win Friday night when Leake Academy comes to J.E. Logan Field. More importantly, the Volunteers will also be looking for a 2-0 start in MAIS Class AAA, District 2 action.
With a victory over Heritage Academy already in its back pocket, Starkville Academy could lock up the top seed in district with a victory here and a Heritage Academy win over Winston Academy.
Starkville Academy is really playing well both offensively and defensively. The Volunteers set big goals to start the season and an early-season loss to Lamar School has not taken away from the desire to reach those goals.
Leake Academy will provide a stiff challenge. You might even see these two meet again in the postseason.
Starkville Academy 28, Leake Academy 21
