A rose to all the residents who opened their arms to a film crew which has been shooting a movie in the Golden Triangle. The Mississippi Film Group has been shooting a horror movie, “The Craving” in and around Starkville and Columbus since February and could not be more pleased with the reception they have received. What the state lacks in incentives, it makes up for in hospitality, said one of film’s producers, Bryan Carpenter. “The people in the region have been outstanding,” he said. This serves as a reminder: One of our greatest assets is our people and the warmth and generosity they display to visitors.
A rose to the Mississippi State women’s basketball team, which continues on its record-setting journey. Friday, MSU set a new single season record for wins in a season with its 71-56 victory over North Carolina State in the NCAA Tournament “Sweet 16,” running its record to 35-1. The Bulldogs now move on to their second straight “Elite Eight” appearance on Sunday against UCLA. The Bulldogs, who finished as the national runner-up last season, are just two wins away from the title game this year and three wins away from the coveted championship. No matter the outcome, the Bulldogs have provided fans with a thrilling season. It’s been a fun ride. Hail State!
A rose to Nora Miller, who was named by the IHL as interim president at Mississippi University for Women on Thursday. Miller, who hopes to become the permanent president, will take over for Dr. Jim Borsig, who is retiring after six years at The W. Miller, who has been at MUW since 2001, is currently the Senior Vice President for Administration. Her intimate knowledge of the university will ensure a smooth transition after Borsig leaves his post at the end of the academic year. We can think of no better choice to guide the university as the selection process for the 15th MUW president continues.
A rose to Telisa Clay Young, who was selected by the Columbus City Council on Tuesday to fill the final vacancy on the Columbus Municipal School District Board of Trustees. Young, a federal social insurance specialist with the Social Security Administration, will fill Currie Fisher’s unexpired term that runs through March 2020. Fisher resigned from the board in February citing personal reasons. With last month’s appointment of Yvonne Cox to the board, the CMSD has a full board, just in time to make a critical decision, the selection of a new superintendent of schools for the district. We congratulate Young, along with the other citizens who applied for the position, for stepping forward at this important time.
