A rose to the teachers throughout the Golden Triangle. Classes began this past week for thousands of children in our area. While each new school year presents its share of new challenges and changes for students, what remains constant is the service of our teachers, likely the least appreciated of all those we think of as public servants.
Teaching is one of those jobs you take home with you. Any teacher worth his/her salt will devote evening hours and weekends to making sure their students have the best education they can provide. Often paying for extra expenses out of their own pockets despite comparatively low pay, it’s obvious that for teachers, the profession is far more than a job: It’s a calling. So have a great year, teachers. And thanks for the important work you do.
A rose to Columbus Fire and Rescue. For years, the fire department has been among the best managed and most stable of all city departments. Now, as a group of CFD firefighters who have formed the backbone of the department for 20 years or more begin to retire, a new generation is preparing to fill their boots.
They have a tough act to follow, but we are confident the spirit of teamwork and dedication that has been created within the CFD will continue as the younger generation begins to create their own chapter in the department’s proud history of service.
A rose to the winners of the recent Discover Downtown Scavenger Hunt: Cooper Goodman, Kimone Simmons and Pamela Brownlee. The scavenger hunt was presented by Main Street Columbus and The Dispatch. Participants tried to match close-up photos of architectural details with the downtown buildings they are part of.
Ours is a community blessed with historic buildings and period architecture that is often under appreciated in the rush of our daily routine. The contest is a reminder that we should all pause from time to time and really appreciate the architectural beauty all around us.
A rose to the Columbus Municipal School District, which was among a group of schools and school districts from across the nation to be honored by the Center for Digital Education at its fourth annual Digital Content and Curriculum Achievement Awards banquet in Denver this week. CMSD was recognized for its efforts in developing a blended K-16 Instructional and Technology Integration Model. We applaud the success of the district on this national recognition.
