Supports Shelton for police chief
As everyone knows, the mayor and city council are in the process of searching for a new police chief for Columbus and has advertised nationally.
There have been a number of applications submitted, and I understand the number has narrowed down to only four.
I know nothing of the others who are applying for this position, and I am sure they are good men, but they know nothing about our city but I do know Capt. Fred Shelton knows the city, the people. He has dedication, character and ability to do the job. I feel he would be an excellent chief.
There are many qualifications for this very important position. I feel Capt. Shelton meets all these qualifications and more. He is a community-minded person and is an important part of our community.
He serves as the chaplain for the department and has been active in our community and, among other activities, is serving as a volunteer chaplain at Baptist Memorial Hospital. I know there are many other things he devotes his time to make our community a better and safer place for everyone.
I would like to see Capt. Fred Shelton be appointed our new chief of police. He has been serving as interim chief since the resignation of Tony Carleton and in my opinion, has done an outstanding job.
He realizes he is on call 24/7 and accepts that responsibility. When called, he will be on the scene to assist officers in their investigation. I have known Capt. Shelton for a number of years. During the eight years I served on the city council, we never had any complaint against him or his work.
Because I could see his leadership ability, it was my privilege to be one of the ones voting to promote him to sergeant. I have never been disappointed in my decision.
Another reason I feel that he is right for the job is he is proud to call Columbus his home and when you live in a place you take pride in what you do and strive to make it better.
Thanks for your consideration and hopefully you will consider all the attributes of a man that we know and appoint him permanent chief of police for Columbus,
Fred Bell
