Recently this paper ran a story with a picture that was, to say the least, disturbing and arresting in its portrayal of human cruelty; made more so by the identity of the perpetrator. It was a visual of the aftermath of a young Pakistani girl who had been tortured by her mother. I can't begin to imagine the devastation that ill treatment or abuse has on the children who are tormented and scarred. I also can't begin to fathom what cultural demons could cause a mother to betray her girl child.
