Appreciates rose
I would personally like to thank The Dispatch for the rose given to our Kiwanis Club in the Sunday, May 4th edition. I’m confident I can speak for the club when I say we are all very proud to be a part of this terrific organization.
I joined the club in 2003 as a way to help reintroduce myself to my hometown, having lived out west for many years. I believe Kiwanis has made me a better person over the years, as I have learned many invaluable life lessons. These lessons include various aspects of community service, leadership, team building and public speaking, all of which have helped me professionally and as a member of our community. More importantly, members of our club collectively make a difference in Columbus and Lowndes County, and we have a direct impact on the lives of children in need.
Put distinctly and officially, “Kiwanis is a global organization of volunteers dedicated to improving the world, one child and one community at a time.” I consider it an honor to serve in our club, and we currently have an especially outstanding group of members. Many may speak about the glory years, as if our best years our behind us, but I disagree, because I think our type of organization is in need now more than ever.
We live in a world where it is becoming increasingly uncommon to meet and communicate face to face. Take your pick: e-mail, voicemail, texting, tweets, Facebook … you name it. While I recognize that these are necessary tools of communication in today’s world, the fact is, humans are social creatures and need direct interaction to survive and thrive.
Call me old-fashioned, but I’d take a smile, handshake, and a pat on the back any day over a text or tweet! Our club is designed to get people together on a weekly basis for food and fellowship, and on a higher level, to develop and implement fundraisers and service projects that better the lives of children in our community.
