Columbus police have identified 25-year-old Antonio Burgin as the masked man who was shot Saturday during an East Columbus robbery.
Burgin, along with 20-year-old Quinton L. Erby, is accused of robbing and shooting store owner Hussein Fadahl Alhajjaji at the A&A Deli Food Mart, 227 N. McCrary Drive, at about 11 p.m.
Surveillance showed the men entered the store and almost immediately one suspect shot the victim in the side, said police Public Information Officer Terrie Songer. The victim returned fire, hitting Burgin once in the face.
The store owner remained in critical but stable condition Monday afternoon at Baptist Memorial Hospital-Golden Triangle, Songer said.
The suspects left the scene in a vehicle, which was found by West Point police after Erby called 911.
Burgin was taken in critical condition to the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. He was listed as in stable condition Monday evening in the Intensive Care Unit.
Erby, of 39 Christopher Drive, was charged with armed robbery. His bond and court date had yet to be set Monday.
Although this is Erby”s first known offense, Burgin has a “lengthy history” of run-ins with police, Songer said.
Burgin was convicted of possession of cocaine in 2006 and grand larceny in 2001, according to circuit court records.
A charge of receiving stolen property was also brought against him in 2008 but was retired to the files pending his good behavior.
Charges for the robbery and shooting Saturday are pending, Songer said.
