The Lowndes County Board of Supervisors voted during its regular meeting Monday to hold a public hearing about abandoning a section of Old Yorkville Road South that hasn’t been maintained for years.
According to maps, Old Yorkville Road South runs between Old Yorkville Road and Highville Court. However, a portion of road that connects with Highville Court has been completely overgrown and now blends with the property at 1212 Old Yorkville Road S. The road funnels down from a two-lane road to a single-lane road, then abruptly dead-ends at what appears to be the edge of private property. According to online mapping, the road should continue through that property and connect with Highville Court.
Lowndes County Road Manager Ronnie Burns said the county hasn’t maintained that section of the road “in many years.”
“It still belongs to the county, though,” he said. “It’s just been overgrown, I guess. That was before my time.”
District 3 Supervisor John Holliman, in whose district the road is located and who proposed the abandonment of the road, told The Dispatch that if the public did not object to the abandonment of the road, the county would just leave the road alone.
“It’s already grown over,” he said. “If nobody has objections, we’ll just abandon it.”
The proposed section of road is less than a mile long.
A public hearing has been scheduled for April 30 during the regular board of supervisors meeting.
