A Hamilton man suffered life-threatening injuries Friday after he reportedly stepped in front of a moving vehicle on Land Road north of Columbus.
Capt. Greg Wright with Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the scene just before 9 p.m. where the 62-year-old Clifton Verner had been hit.
The driver, a 53-year-old male, said he was traveling on Land Road and saw a man with dark clothes walking in his lane. The pedestrian moved over, so the driver proceeded in the right lane. However, the driver said, as his vehicle approached the pedestrian’s location — about 100 yards east of where Land intersects with Downs Road — Verner stepped in front of the vehicle causing a collision.
Wright said a deputy administered the driver a Breathalyzer at the scene and found no alcohol present in the driver’s system. There was no evidence, according to the accident report, the driver had driven improperly, Wright said, and he was not arrested.
Wright said Verner was taken to North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. The Dispatch could not confirm Verner’s status by press time.
