A man involved in a chase with Lowndes County deputies Tuesday is in custody.
Officers with Lowndes County Sheriff's Office arrested Emmitt Defonze Calmes, 34, of 218 Robin St., late Tuesday, after Calmes allegedly attacked a county resident and fled from officers.
Deputies had first received a call about Calmes at 10:18 p.m. when they responded to the Sand Road area about a possible prowler, according to a LCSO press release. When they arrived at the scene and met Calmes, he told deputies he had permission to be on the property, which the property owner confirmed.
Minutes later, deputies received another call, this time that Calmes and the property owner had gotten into an altercation, and that Calmes had attempted to throw the victim out of a moving car on Sand Road, the press release said. At the scene, deputies found Calmes and attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect merely increased his speed.
Deputies chased Calmes into Columbus and followed him through the city. The press release did not give an estimated speed but said at times Calmes' vehicle became airborne as he crossed railroad tracks. After about 3-1/2 miles, he crashed in a vacant lot on 24th Street South.
Calmes then got out of the car and began running, climbing several fences while officers chased him on foot. Deputies found him hiding in some bushes on 23rd Street South and arrested him at 11:30 p.m.
Deputies also called an ambulance so paramedics could tend injuries on Calmes' hands from jumping fences.
Calmes has been charged with felony eluding and misdemeanor domestic violence. He's in custody at Lowndes County Adult Detention Center on a Mississippi Department of Corrections hold for Itawamba County. He also has a misdemeanor charge from Columbus Police Department.
